15 probiotic foods that promote good gut bacteria

3. Greek Yogurt

The most popular fermented food that is probiotic rich is Greek Yogurt. Two strains of bacteria can be used to make yogurt. The strains used are streptococcusthermophilus and lactobacillusbulgaricus. The bacteria is added to pasteurized milk. The bacteria produces lactic acid, which thickens the milk. It is this lactic acid that makes it thick and creamy. Although most Greek yogurts are a good source of protein, they may not contain probiotics.

Some types of Greek yogurt are heated after fermentation. The heat treatment will kill most of the active cultures. When adding Greek yogurt to the diet, look out for active cultures. Avoid those with added sugar, as they can be harmful to your gut bacteria.
