Many activities can cause the eustachian tubes to malfunction. Altitude changes can be caused by rock climbing.

Swimming can also lead to pressure changes that prevent the eustachian tube from functioning properly. There is no treatment for eustachian tubes problems caused by these activities or changes. It’s normal. Many rock climbers and mountain climbers wear earprotection in order to prevent pressure changes that could cause eustachian tube dysfunction.

You can find earplugs that are made specifically for certain activities. Some people experience earaches or ear infections as a result of participating in activities which can cause temporary eustachian dysfunction. Some people have no problems participating in these activities, and they avoid the temporary pain or pressure associated with eustachian dysfunction.
